Históricamente el psicoanálisis fue asociado con una teoría liberal, moderna, capaz de subvertir el orden social y cultural. Por ello, siempre mejor recibida en las democracias que en las dictaduras que atentaron contra ella. En los 70 el psicoanálisis no era sólo una teoría psicológica sino un instrumento válido para luchar contra la represión política y social existente en la Argentina. Es por ello, que muchas carreras de Psicología se cierran con la llegada de la dictadura. En Tucumán, la condición para su re apertura fue precisamente la desaparición del psicoanálisis del currículum, concebida como una “mala palabra”, pero de tal poder que en sus manos quedaba la posibilidad de su continuidad. Su poder no era otro que la formación de un sujeto crítico y transformador.
