En este trabajo presentaré algunos datos primarios obtenidos de una investigación realizada a partir del estudio del proceso terapéutico de corte focal, sistémico y narrativo, llevado a cabo a doce varones catalogados como violentos, tratados en el Centro de Asistencia en Violencia Doméstica, dependiente del Instituto Nacional de las Mujeres del Uruguay, entre los años 2004 y 2006. A lo lago del artículo mostraré algunas características comunes a todos ellos, y me detendré en el hecho de su voluntaria concurrencia al Centro, de su aceptación de la situación de violencia y de su búsqueda de cambio. Asimismo señalaré un aspecto del trabajo que se llevó a cabo con estos consultantes que consistió en la construcción de un viraje narrativo entre ser violento y estar violento. No me detendré en otros aspectos, que también estuvieron presentes en la intervención, como, por ejemplo, la propuesta de entender a la violencia como una adicción y la promoción de reflexión y sensibilización en torno a los estereotipos sexistas. Finalmente trataré de demostrar que la violencia doméstica en la que participan estos varones es "atípica" con respecto a las situaciones de violencia doméstica que generalmente llegan a la consulta. Palabras clave Violencia doméstica Varones Identidad Narrativa ABSTRACT BETWEEN BEING VIOLENT AND ACTING VIOLENT In this paper I will present some preliminary findings from a research carried on twelve male subjects labeled as violent men, during a therapeutic process of narrative, systemic and focal nature, at the Domestic Violence Assistance Center of the National Institute of Women of Uruguay, between 2004 and 2006. I will show some common features they all have and I will focus on their voluntary attendance to the Center, their acknowledgement of the situation of violence and their search for change. I will also describe a part of the work carried out with these men, that consisted of the construction of a narrative turn from being violent to acting violent. I will not describe other aspects of the therapeutic intervention like, for instance, the proposal to understand violence as an addiction and the promotion of reflection and sensibilization on sexist stereotypes. In the end, I will try to show that the domestic violence in which these male subjects are immersed is "atypical" as compared to other domestic violence consultations.
