Según Krauskopf (1994) el desarrollo adolescente es una interacción delicada con los entes sociales del entorno; refiere no solo a su biografía individual, sino a su historia y al presente de su sociedad. Este periodo produce con mayor intensidad interacción entre tendencias individuales, adquisiciones psicosociales, metas socialmente disponibles, fortalezas, desventajas del entorno. Los traumatismos craneoencefálicos (TCE) afectan principalmente a jóvenes, ocasionando alteraciones físicas, cognitivas, conductuales y sociales que limitan sus actividades; incluso años posteriores. Entre las actividades realizadas por adolescentes se encuentran las de participación social (PS); la analizaremos como dimensión esencial de la vida, por la implicancia y tiempo que le otorgan. Investigaciones anteriores de este equipo, refieren que la PS centra una dimensión significativa y prioritaria en el adolescente. Las familias resultan protagonistas para lograr el éxito. Sin embargo, en aquellas con adolescentes discapacitados presupone una mayor complejidad. Presenta tres casos con lesión cerebral adquirida, analizando la PS antes de la lesión, al inicio del programa de rehabilitación, al alta y tres meses posteriores. Los resultados demuestran que al alta, el impacto refiere la capacidad de planificación de reuniones socio familiares y participar de actividades individuales, siendo los familiares cercanos quienes acompañan a los jóvenes en las actividades.
