Lacan al calificar la tristeza como pecado de cobardía moral opta por un término medieval, al que sin embargo dota de actualidad. Permite a su vez, evocar una trilogía de la época de los monasterios que son la Tristitia, el taedium vitae y la acedia. La falla del deber de bien decir y de reconocerse en el inconsciente puede presentarse con un afecto triste, o como otra forma de retroceder frente al saber bajo el modo de la acedia, una especie de fatiga psíquica. Desde Freud y Lacan hay una vía que nos permite proponer tanto a los fenómenos depresivos como a la fatiga psíquica, (sin el afecto triste), incluyendo la melancolía, en su diferencia estructural, en cierta articulación entre el narcisismo y superyó. Nos inclinamos a ubicar del lado de la tristeza, ya sea que se presente con el afecto triste, depresivo, o bajo la forma de la acedia, como un retroceder frente al bien-decir, la cobardía moral de retroceder frente al saber de la falta de saber, dejando para las psicosis y neurosis narcisistas, tal como puede ser incluida la melancolía, como un rechazo de saber, en el sentido del rechazo del Inconciente, desabonado de él.
