No se trata de que el analista ponga en juego sus pasiones en la dirección de una cura, por más que esto resulte de su propio análisis: de allí la referencia a la apatía estoica. Tampoco se trata que su neutralidad lo lleve solamente a ocupar el lugar del muerto. Para Lacan la apatía permite trascender de los deseos de los que pudiera tratarse en el punto en que el analista está poseído por un deseo más fuerte. Este deseo más fuerte, puede ser aislado por el analista en la medida en que en él se ha producido una mutación en la economía de su deseo. Si nos detenemos en esta mutación, leemos allí el efecto del análisis del analista. Esta mutación se va delineando a lo largo de las clases de este seminario, para concluir en el deseo del analista.
