Resumen
Ableism can be defined as the social production of a specific type of self and body as the perfect, species-typical and therefore essential and fully human. This network of beliefs, processes and practices privileges certain individual abilities related to productivity and competitiveness, at the expense of others. A key element of ableism is the belief that disability negatively impacts quality of life to a considerable and necessary extent, and should be ameliorated, cured, or eliminated. In bioethics, this common belief has been identified as the "standard view of disability" (SVD). This presentation will evaluate the influence of the SVD on triage criteria developed and used during the pandemic of COVID-19, such as Quality Adjusted Life Years (QALYs), Disability Adjusted Life Years (DALYs), and the Barthel Index. To this end, the presentation will begin by rebuilding the concept of the SVD and its specific implications in the allocation of health resources and triage decisions during emergencies. Second, problematic prioritization and tie-breaker triage criteria will be shown, especially in the cases of the United States, Germany, and Colombia. Finally, the presentation will connect the SVD with these triage criteria and reveal the ethical issues resulting from these influences. The presentation aims to reveal the injustices in the distribution of scarce health resources that arise from establishing prioritization or tie-breaking criteria based on disability-related, quality-of-life, or "functional independence" scores.
