Resumen
Sports are very important for health, but are more important for the communities´ social culture. In informal sports - sports not organized with rigid rules - groups are integrated by people of different ages and professions, who don't participated in any traditional sports organization and who celebrate different sports practices in free places. The concept of "free-place" is relevant to understand this work. Recently, this citizen phenomenon shows people playing and practicing sports without sports organizations. This situation hasn't deserved sport researchers´ consideration and in this case we examine it from an anthropological point of view to understand culture in a greater sense.The questions that guided our way were: What do we know about these sports groups? How do they play sports? How do people gather to practice sports? We worked with ethnographic research techniques during the years 2001 and 2002. The research group investigated three informal sports groups in Villa Mercedes City, San Luis province, Argentina. The groups were made up of young males of 14 to 26 years old. These groups revived the meaning of a new dimension of sports as an instance of pleasure. The popular sports manifestations show five levels or categories of a particular use of sports: 1) free sports practice 2) sports places 3) alternative sports styles 4) sports elements and sports clothing 5) common identities and positive feelings.Popular sports are very different to traditional practices of sports where the coordination and organization of sports have become high level.
