La formulación del Otro, en tanto lugar, sufre un giro importante en la enseñanza de Lacan a la altura del seminario “De un otro al Otro” (1968/69), donde instituye a ese Otro como conjunto vacío luego de trabajar al Otro como castrado en el Grafo del deseo. Sabemos que, en su funcionamiento, el Grafo del deseo es un matema que transmite la constitución del sujeto del inconsciente en el campo del Otro barrado. Pero la formalización del A como conjunto vacío reordena el campo del goce y relanza la pregunta por la clínica en términos de clínica de lo real. Ahora bien, las resonancias de este vaciamiento del Otro recién surgirán a partir de establecer las fórmulas de la cuantificación, en tanto éstas son el modo de escritura en el inconsciente del ‘no hay relación sexual’. Es entonces a partir de esta lógica, ‘no hay relación sexual’, que instituirá como ‘el saber del psicoanalista’, lo que le permitirá ordenar el campo del goce de ahora en más fallido y, a la vez, ubicar el trauma en el Otro como su ser.
