Se presenta la síntesis de resultados de investigaciones, en su mayoría estudios empíricos, realizados durante diez años de investigación (1996-2006) acerca de la representación social de la vejez, vigente en nuestro medio sociocultural. Nuestros trabajos se orientan hacia la exploración de diferentes ámbitos en los que consideramos relevante la influencia que ejercen las creencias y valoraciones de la vejez, como las modalidades de envejecimiento, la participación social, las estrategias de afrontamiento, el aprendizaje y la cognición, entre otros. Nuestras investigaciones han requerido del empleo de variadas metodologías de recolección y análisis de datos, tanto de naturaleza cuanti como cualitativa. Recientemente se ha recortado para nosotros un nuevo interés: la representación social de la cognición en la vejez y su relación con las reales capacidades cognitivas en esta etapa vital. Nuestros estudios preliminares indican que la representación social acerca de las posibilidades intelectuales y el pensamiento en la vejez comparte con la representación más amplia de la vejez, su connotación negativa. Más allá de la tradición investigativa y en concordancia con nuevas líneas teóricas en psicología del desarrollo y cognición en el adulto, nuestros resultados aportan a la aún escasa evidencia sobre las particularidades del funcionamiento intelectual en la vejez. RESEARCH 1996-2006 We present a brief of results of investigations, for de most part empiric research, it carried out ten years (1996-2006) about social representation about old age in our socio-cultural context. Our research lead to exploration of different issues in it we acknowledge important the influence of beliefs and values about old age, like a ways of age and the social participation, coping strategy, learning and cognition, etc. Our investigations have required of the employment of varied gathering methodologies and analysis of data, so much of nature quantitative as qualitative. Recently it has been clipped for us a new interest: the social representation of the knowledge in the age and their relationship with the real knowledge capacities in this vital stage. Our preliminary studies indicate that the social representation about the intellectual possibilities and the thought in the age shares with the widest representation in the age, its negative connotation. Beyond the investigative tradition and in agreement with new theoretical lines in psychology of the development and knowledge in the adult, our results contribute to the even scarce evidence about the particularities of the intellectual operation in the age.
