El Proyecto de Investigación en el que se enmarca esta ponencia tiene como propósito estudiar las representaciones sociales que construyen diversos sujetos, en situaciones y contextos diferenciados. En una de las líneas de trabajo, investigamos las representaciones que construyen estudiantes, sobre las prácticas profesionales y laborales de futuro, en el momento de su ingreso a la Universidad. Incluimos el análisis del perfil psico-sociológico de los ingresantes, sus modalidades de elección y los posibles temores y conflictos emergentes de esta situación, analizando la incidencia de diversos factores en el desarrollo de los estudios. Las representaciones que los jóvenes elaboran sobre las carreras están teñidas por un aspecto imaginario y varían de acuerdo a las características personales y socio-culturales, reflejando fantasías, creencias y estereotipos. Encontramos fuertes distorsiones en las representaciones de ingresantes en diversas carreras, determinadas por las influencias de imaginarios del contexto, condiciones que actúan como posibles causales de deserción al hacer variar las expectativas de los estudiantes sobre las prácticas reales de las profesiones. Un importante número de jóvenes presenta inseguridad y serias dudas sobre la elección de la carrera, al no haber realizado procesos de orientación vocacional. La orientación vocacional juega entonces un papel fundamental sobre estos determinantes. Palabras clave Representaciones Imaginario Elección Universidad ABSTRACT ADOLESCENTS AND VOCATIONAL CHOICE As part of a wider project concerned with the social representations that different subjects construct in different situations and contexts, we studied students’ representations of professional and working practices at the time they start university. This presentation includes an analysis of the psycho-sociological profile of freshmen, their choice styles, possible fears and conflicts that emerge from this situation and the relationship that exists between these and students’ progress. Students’ representation of the different courses of studies is affected by an imaginary aspect and varies according to their personal and socio-cultural characteristics which reflect fantasies, beliefs and stereotypes. We found strong distortions in the representations freshmen from different courses make, determined by influences from imaginaries of the context, situations that can be taken as possible causes of desertion because they change students’ expectations about the professional practice. A big number of students who did not attend vocational courses show uncertainty and have doubts about the course they chose. We found that both personal and socio-environmental factors have an impact on students’ desertion and backwardness. Choice style and the construction of vocationalprofessional identity are among the main factors that intervene in students´ desertion and backwardness. This result indicates that vocational choice counseling has an important role in students’ performance. Key words Representations Imaginary Subject Context
